So, you have a dream to build a new playground or recreational area, but where do you start? We recently wrote a blog outlining the various products in the industry and the pros and cons to consider when choosing the right surfacing material for your project. But, even before selecting surfacing material, it’s important to take a step back and answer some key questions about your dream playground or recreational area. The questions below provide a good foundation for items to think about and discuss prior to starting the planning process and making decisions about a new playground.

Questions to Ask:

  • What is the goal of the new playground/recreation facility?
  • What age(s) will the playground be designed for?
  • How many visitors do you want to play at once? How much space should be available for the adults/supervisors?
  • What level of ADA compliance do you want to achieve for the play area? What accessibility issues need to be met?
  • What is the overall look and feel you want the new play area to have? Is there a theme you want to achieve that will need to be incorporated with the equipment and surface materials?
  • What type(s) of surfacing would be best for the needs of your play area?
  • What is the fall protection of the surfacing material you are considering? Will the surface lessen the impact of a child's fall?
  • Does the site location offer the appropriate features (soil, drainage, sun/shade, parking, restrooms, etc.)?
  • What amount of new landscaping is needed for the area?
  • What is the budget for both the initial build of the playground and over time for maintenance?
  • How much time and money do you have available for ongoing maintenance and care? Will there be someone on-site to monitor any maintenance needed?
  • Does the playground surfacing and/or equipment you have in mind come with any type of warranty?
  • What local codes and requirements apply to the new play area?
  • Do you have a plan in place for liability?
